Tired of Living Paycheck-to-Paycheck? Read This

(ProsperNews.net) – Estimates vary, but at least 60% of Americans are living paycheck-to-paycheck. It is a vicious cycle that leaves many feeling defeated and unable to get any traction with their financial lives. That is why many are begging for information about how they can break the cycle and put themselves in a better position. Breaking the cycle and making significant changes is not easy to do, but we have some tips that can help you climb that mountain.

Create a Comprehensive Budget

Ramsey Solutions, run by Dave Ramsey, financial guru, and radio show host, recommends that you begin the process by creating a comprehensive budget for yourself:

When you budget, you’ll see spending habits you didn’t even know you had. Then, you can make the changes you need so you can reach your goals—for right now and far into the future.

Operating without a budget is equivalent to flying an airplane with a blindfold. It is necessary to know how much money is coming in, how much is going out, and where those dollars are being spent.

Review Areas in the Budget That Can Be Cut

Looking for savings in a budget is one of the most effective ways to create extra cash flow for yourself. Experian highlights some areas where you may be spending money that you could be saving. These areas include:

  • Subscriptions – Who among us isn’t guilty of having extra subscriptions they forgot they signed up for? This is something that many people have struggled with in recent years, as many platforms have moved to a subscription model. Therefore, there may be some extra fluff in your budget that you can cut out when you eliminate some subscriptions.
  • Shopping – That extra shopping trip you make to purchase a nice something for yourself will not help your budget. You should do your best to cut out those extra shopping trips whenever possible, as they are likely draining your bank account and causing you to remain stuck in the paycheck-to-paycheck lifestyle.
  • Dining Out – At the end of a long day of work, it can feel like a struggle to create a meal for yourself and your family. However, it would be best if you attempted to take every measure that you possibly can to cook at home as much as you possibly can. It is expensive to eat in restaurants, and you can prepare food in your own home at a fraction of the cost. Focus on making meals at home and avoid going out as much as you have in the past. Also, consider using coupons and other savings strategies at the grocery store to reduce your bill there as well.

These areas of your budget (and many more) are potentially ideal for being cut back on.

Prepare for Unexpected Expenses

There is only one predictable thing about life, and that is that it is unpredictable. Charles Schwab recommends that everyone builds an emergency fund of at least $1,000 to $2,000 to get started. This is just a starter emergency fund, though, and people should truly aim to hold between 3-6 months’ worth of expenses in their accounts at all times to help them weather any storm thrown their way.

If you run into a situation where your car breaks down, you have an unexpected medical expense or something else that results in a hit to your pocketbook; you will want to have the funds to cover this. Prepare for the unexpected, and you will be able to handle those potential costs.

You can break the paycheck-to-paycheck cycle, but you must be willing to put in the time and effort to make it happen. It takes diligence, sacrifice, and dedication, but it is so much better to live without the constant stress of one unexpected expense wiping you out.
