(ProsperNews.net) – Authorities in Washington have captured a man accused of stabbing a woman in the neck on a college campus. Police arrested 31-year-old Salvador Aguilar and charged him with first-degree assault and vehicle theft after a female student was injured at the Archer Gallery in Clark College in Vancouver.
Vancouver Police say the incident happened on May 14 when the alleged victim, employed at the college, was sitting outside the Gaiser Hall building on campus. Jami Crawford told officers she saw a man run toward her, shouting for help. He then struck her with what she initially thought was a punch until realizing she was bleeding and had been stabbed.
The affidavit states that Crawford told officers her alleged assailant had shouted something about his daughter being sexually assaulted before attacking her. Initial police searches did not help find the suspect, but CCTV footage allowed officers to use photos for public appeals.
A man who recognized Aguilar told police that he sometimes sleeps outside a property in the Rose Village neighborhood. When officers followed up on the tip, they found him sleeping in a truck’s cab. Police also found the clothes the suspect wore in the college video footage.
Furthermore, a woman named Trista Cochran came forward, saying a man fitting Aguilar’s description tried to get into her car the previous day and made repeated comments about his daughter’s sexual assault.
During police interrogation, the suspect insisted that he lashed out at Crawford in self-defense, though the affidavit noted that this was not consistent with CCTV evidence.
Mr. Aguilar also faces charges of disorderly conduct, residential burglary, and malicious mischief related to previous incidents. Judge Robert Lewis set bail at $510,000 during the defendant’s appearance at Clark County Superior Court on May 17. Ms. Crawford received medical treatment at Peace Health Southwest Medical Center, where staff said she narrowly avoided serious injury, noting that the wound was only millimeters from vital blood vessels.
