Walz Defends Providing Services to Illegal Immigrants, Praises Road Safety

(ProsperNews.net) – Minnesota Governor Tim Walz appeared on Fox News Sunday, where he defended his state’s policies of offering driver’s licenses, free tuition, and healthcare to immigrants living in Minnesota illegally. Responding to host Shannon Bream, who questioned whether these benefits act as a “magnet” attracting more immigrants, Walz pushed back on the idea, arguing that these measures contribute to overall safety and prosperity in the state.

Bream referenced a Wall Street Journal article noting Walz’s support for initiatives that allow undocumented immigrants to access benefits such as driver’s licenses and free state university tuition. She asked, “Why should Minnesota taxpayers, or taxpayers across the country, foot the bill for these programs?” Critics often argue that such policies incentivize dangerous journeys for immigrants and burden taxpayers.

In his response, Walz emphasized the positive impact these policies have on Minnesota. “Minnesota ranks as a top-five business state, a top-three state for children’s welfare, and we are number one in healthcare access,” he said. He also pointed out that Minnesota’s roads are among the safest in the country, implying that allowing undocumented immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses helps ensure safer driving conditions.

While Bream pressed him on whether these policies could be seen as an open invitation for more undocumented immigration, Walz avoided directly addressing that point, instead highlighting the benefits the state has reaped under these laws. He also defended Vice President Kamala Harris’s stance on immigration, calling her border policies some of the “strongest and fairest” seen in recent years.

Ultimately, Walz framed Minnesota’s approach as one that balances economic growth, healthcare access, and safety, countering the narrative that these initiatives encourage illegal immigration without positive outcomes for residents.
