(ProsperNews.net) – Vice President Kamala Harris has announced that students can secure paid work to help people register to vote. Speaking to a group of leaders in the White House, Harris said the students will work under a Federal Work-Study Program, help engage people in the democratic process, and “activate them.”
Republicans have expressed outrage at taxpayer dollars being used in what they see as an attempt to bolster Joe Biden’s campaign. Senator Bill Hagerty of Tennessee said Biden signed Executive Order 14019, which ordered the government to use public funds to mobilize his supporters. Rep. Bryan Steil of Wisconsin called the scheme “unacceptable,” while former Trump aide Stephen Miller said he would seek further details under freedom of information laws.
Jason Snead, executive director of the conservative Honest Elections Project, said President Biden is just one step away from outright paying people to vote for him.
The announcement comes as polls show hemorrhaging support for President Biden among younger voters, who comprise about one-fifth of the electorate.
A poll by the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE) found that 31% of voters aged 18 to 34 have not yet decided who they will vote for in November, while 37% say they intend to vote Democrat and 25% will back the GOP.
Comparable surveys show a shift from Joe Biden to Donald Trump among the 18 to 29 age group. For example, a January USA Today/Suffolk University poll placed Trump ahead of Biden by 37% to 33%. A New York Times/Siena College survey the previous month yielded similar results, with Trump ahead by 49% to 43%.
The numbers indicate a significant shift from 2020, when 61% of 18 to 29-year-olds voted for President Biden, and just 36% backed Trump. In December, NBC reported that a potential cause is Biden’s handling of the Israel-Hamas war. It noted that 70% of voters under 35 said they were unhappy with the President’s approach to the conflict.
