(ProsperNews.net) – Marianna Budanova, the wife of Ukrainian intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov, has been poisoned, according to Ukrainian media. Budanova once called for Ukrainian troops to “keep killing Russians anywhere on the face of this world until the complete victory of Ukraine,” and her alleged poisoning was reported weeks after Russia said it intended to pursue terrorism charges against her.
Details of how or when she was allegedly poisoned are not included in media reports. Babel, a Ukrainian media outlet, said Budanova is hospitalized and undergoing treatment, while a separate media organization, Ukrainska Pravda, claims the poison was probably placed in her food, along with members of Ukraine’s intelligence services.
The BBC cited Ukrainian reports claiming Budanova had been feeling unwell for a “prolonged period of time” before hospitalization but did not explicitly blame Russia for her illness.
In October, Russian officials said they were charging Chief Budanov, Ukrainian Naval Forces Commander Oleksiy Neizhpapa, and 383rd Unmanned Aviation Brigade Commander Serhiy Burdenyuk with terrorism offenses for using unmanned aerial vehicles to carry out strikes inside Russian territory.
Russia has a long history of poisoning its enemies, and according to some media reports, one victim was billionaire Roman Abramovich. Mr. Abramovich reportedly attended a meeting in Kyiv in March last year to try to mediate between the warring sides. He and several others at the conference later reported experiencing a sudden onset of streaming eyes and “peeling skin” on their face and hands.
Christo Grozev, a reporter with Bellingcat, told the Wall Street Journal, “It was not intended to kill, it was just a warning.”
Poisoning enemies is a tactic that dates back to the Soviet Union and was initially conceived by Vladimir Lenin, who ordered the creation of a poisons factory known as the “Special Room.” Scientists carried out experimental poisonings on gulag prisoners in the Soviet era, and some believe that dictator Joseph Stalin used “Special Room” tactics to eliminate Lenin.
