(ProsperNews.net) – A tragic event occurred in South Africa when a North Carolina college student was found dead after going missing on a hiking trip. Brook Cheuvront, a 20-year-old student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, had been studying abroad as part of an internship with a non-profit organization. On Saturday, she set out to hike Cape Town’s famous Table Mountain, but sadly, she never returned.
Brook had been sharing her hiking experiences on social media, showing off her love for the outdoors. From her posts, she seemed like an experienced trekker who had recently hiked in southern Africa. However, something went wrong during her hike that day. A tracking app she used to document her route suddenly stopped updating, which raised alarms. Concerned, her family and friends reported her missing.
The search lasted through the night, and by Sunday afternoon, authorities made a heartbreaking discovery. Brook’s body was found on Devil’s Peak, a popular trail connected to Table Mountain. Western Cape police confirmed that her body was recovered by an emergency helicopter.
Lieutenant-Colonel Malcolm Pojie, a spokesman for the local police, said that an autopsy will be conducted to find out exactly what caused her death. At this point, the circumstances surrounding her passing remain unclear.
Brook’s father, Steve Cheuvront, expressed his deep sorrow in a post on Facebook. “She was recovered,” he wrote. “We are devastated. God help me and us.” His message reflects the grief that has now consumed the family.
Support and sympathy poured in from Brook’s friends and followers on social media. One person shared how deeply her posts had touched them, writing, “I’ve read all her posts. It’s haunting to see how bravely she was living.” Another described Brook as a “lovely and intelligent girl,” recalling how she had once spoken at their school.
Another friend, clearly heartbroken, said, “I’ll miss your contagious laugh,” sending love to Brook’s family and partner. The outpouring of support highlights the impact she had on those around her.
Brook’s death is a devastating reminder that even experienced hikers face risks in nature. Though her life was cut short, her adventurous spirit continues to inspire those who knew her. Her body was found on Devil’s Peak, a popular trail connected to Table Mountain.
