(ProsperNews.net) – The US and its allies have successfully targeted more than 60 sites inside Yemen in their battle to stop the terror group from attacking ships in the Red Sea. The Houthis, who are engaged in a civil war inside their home country, have been bombarding vessels on the significant commercial shipping route as revenge for Western support of Israel’s war against Hamas.
Strikes against Houthi military and communications bases were launched by the US and UK with support from Australia, Canada, the Netherlands, another nations. A recent statement from the Department of Defense said: “This multinational action targeted radar systems, air defense systems, and storage and launch sites This multinational action targeted radar systems, air defense systems, and storage and launch sites.”
UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron stated that the latest strikes intended to send the “clearest possible message” that Houthis must stop their Red Sea activities, adding that there is no intent to harm Yemeni civilians.
Last April, the UN estimated that 377,000 people in Yemen have died since 2015, when neighboring Saudi Arabia launched attacks on the Houthis, believing their ascent to power would embolden its arch-rival, Iran. A civil war has also raged there since its former President, Ali Abdullah Saleh, was ousted in a popular uprising in 2011.
The perceived weakness of his replacement, Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi, prompted Houthis to advance and fight for power.
Following the terror attack on Israel on October 7, the Islamist Houthis expressed their staunch support for Hamas. Some commentators suggest this support is driven partly by political positioning at home and because the group largely depends on Iranian financial support – Iran also supports and funds Hamas.
The impact of the Houthi attacks in the Red Sea is growing, and several major companies, including BP and Shell, have ceased shipments through the region. Others have rerouted vessels and added thousands of miles to their journeys, pushing up costs and potentially having a devastating impact on inflation.
