(ProsperNews.net) – Two Ukrainian sisters were arrested and charged with desecrating a grave after a video showed them dancing and “twerking” on the resting place of fallen soldiers. The women filmed themselves performing the suggestive dance in a Kyiv cemetery on Ukraine’s Independence Day on August 24. Police detained the sisters only hours after the video appeared online, and they face a potential prison term of up to five years.
Police issued a statement saying, “Investigators of the Desnyan police department, in agreement with the district prosecutor’s office, started criminal proceedings under Part 2 of Article 297 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — insult to the grave.”
The women, who have not given their names, went public on Instagram and apologized for their behavior. “It was absolutely not our aim to denigrate anyone, least of all the memory of our fallen heroes,” they said. The pair added that their own father is buried in the cemetery, and they were visiting his grave when they made the video.
The sisters wore short skirts and tank tops while performing the provocative “twerk” and were denounced on social media for showing such disrespect. “Lack of brains,” “lack of respect,” and “disgusting,” were three comments left by users of the social media platform Reddit.
Twerking is described as a dance style that involves thrusting hips and buttocks while maintaining a low stance. It’s also known as “booty shaking” and “bounce” and is largely considered part of American black culture.
Music star Lizzo gave a speech on the origins of the dance during an event in 2021 and said it dates back centuries, with its beginnings in the Ivory Coast in West Africa. “Black people carry the origins of this dance through our DNA, through our blood, through our bones. We made twerking the global cultural phenomenon it has become today,” Lizzo said.
She added that while black creations are often adopted by wider society, the creators are “erased from history books.”
