(ProsperNews.Net) – The judge overseeing the latest indictment against Donald Trump has a history of handing down harsh punishments, specifically to those found guilty of misconduct on January 6.
US District Judge Tanya Chutkan, appointed to the bench by Barack Obama, has imprisoned some rioters from January 6 and even given longer sentences than the prosecution sought. On four occasions, she jailed demonstrators against the wishes of prosecuting attorneys and sent one woman to prison merely for posting “best day ever” on her Facebook page. The judge also has a history of ruling against Mr. Trump.
In a second January 6 case in November 2021, Chutkan refused the former President’s request to block the release of documents to the Congressional committee investigating the day’s events. According to the Washington Times, she “rejected his arguments that he could hold privilege over documents from his administration even after President Joe Biden had cleared the way for the National Archives to turn the papers over.”
Judge Chutkan, who was appointed in 2014, has close ties to the Democratic Party and has worked at the same law firm as Hunter Biden.
President Trump has been indicted on federal charges for the second time this year. He is charged with four counts, including conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of an official proceeding, and conspiracy against rights. Jack Smith, the Special Counsel appointed by the Department of Justice to investigate Trump, said the day’s events were “fuelled” by his “lies.”
Many of the former President’s Republican colleagues have spoken out in his defense, while others justify the judicial onslaught. Trump’s Vice President Mike Pence said the charges against his former boss should remind people that nobody is above the Constitution of the United States. “Our country is more important than one man. Our constitution is more important than any one man’s career,” he said.
Mike Pence is running against Trump in the race for the Republican nomination for 2024.
