(ProsperNews.net) – Donald Trump told the National Rifle Association (NRA) that four more years of President Biden will be four more years of anti-gun “communists” running the Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) agency. Speaking at the NRA Great American Outdoor Show Presidential Forum in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, the former President told attendees that the Second Amendment will always be safe with him in the White House.
Mr. Trump furthermore told the gun enthusiasts that while President Biden permits criminals and terrorists to cross the US border, he has simultaneously attempted to remove Americans’ “God-given right to self-defense.” He added that not a single piece of legislation had been passed to reduce Second Amendment rights during his term in the Oval Office. “There was great pressure on me having to do with guns. We did nothing. We didn’t yield,” he said.
Some commentators, however, point out that Trump did scold fellow Republicans for being “afraid of the NRA” during his time in office. Jill Colvin, writing for the Associated Press, said Trump “grappled” with gun violence during his Presidency and promised “very strong background checks” in the wake of the mass shooting in Parkland, Florida, in 2018 that left 17 people dead.
Nevertheless, his call for background checks mirrors those he made before becoming President. In 2013, he answered a question on Twitter in which he stated he was a big Second Amendment supporter but “background checks to weed out the sickos are fine.”
In 2018, he called for a bill to institute background checks, but a year later, he threatened to veto legislation that would require universal background checks. Also, in 2018, he advocated raising the age limit for buying assault rifles from 18 years old to 21 but eventually hinted that such decisions should be left to individual states.
In 2024, the former President clarified his current position and promised gun owners that “every single attack” on their rights would be “terminated.”
