(ProsperNews.net) – President Trump continues to deny any wrongdoing in the classified documents case, even in light of a leaked recording that appears to prove the case against him. The recording first aired on CNN on June 26, and in it, Trump can be heard discussing a document about Iran and stating that it contains information that is “highly confidential.” He also acknowledges that he could not declassify the paper because he was no longer in the Oval Office.
His critics say it proves he knowingly and deliberately obtained and kept files containing government secrets. Former prosecutor Joyce Vance described the tape as the Justice Department’s smoking gun.
“While he’s in the room with these folks on tape, he’s actually showing classified material that he is not entitled to have, to other people who are not entitled to see it. While discussing his guilty state of mind and knowledge that it’s a crime at the same time. It’s really pretty remarkable,” she said.
According to the Department of Justice indictment, the document featured on the tape is a Pentagon file that details US military plans, specifically related to Iran. The former President has called the tape a “hoax” and said what was discussed in the recording was not a classified document.
Trump told reporters he has endured seven years of media attacks and false accusations. He compared the leaked tape to false allegations that he had colluded with Russia – an allegation since proven false. Mr. Trump then turned the tables on President Biden, saying he is the one guilty of wrongdoing. “He has 850 boxes, all over the place, nobody even knows where they are,” Trump said.
Donald Trump pleaded not guilty on 37 counts at a Miami courthouse in June. Charges include unauthorized possession of classified material, obstruction of justice, and making false statements to law enforcement. He faces a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
