(ProsperNews.net) – Donald Trump said he supports bringing religion back into schools and backs those who want to display the Ten Commandments in educational facilities. Writing on his Truth Social media account, the former President stated that he loves the Ten Commandments and would happily see them publicly displayed, adding that this could serve as the starting point for a “revival of religion.” Mr. Trump asked how America could go wrong if it followed the commandments and said religion is “desperately needed” in the United States.
The former President’s comments come as Louisiana became the first US state to require that public schools display the commandments. Republican lawmakers in the Pelican State passed a bill obliging schools to display the Christian foundations, in a controversial decision that defies a 1980 Supreme Court ruling preventing similar moves in Kentucky on the grounds that they violated the First Amendment establishment clause separating church from state.
The Louisiana legislation also permits – but does not require – the display of the Mayflower Compact, often referred to as America’s “first Constitution,” and the Declaration of Independence.
The American Civil Liberties Union, Americans United for Separation of Church and State, and the Freedom from Religion Foundation all responded immediately and said they would challenge Louisiana. In a joint statement, the groups said, “The law violates the separation of church and state and is blatantly unconstitutional.”
The threat of legal action by secularist groups has largely prevented similar legislation from passing in other states, including Texas and Oklahoma. In the Lone Star State, a similar bill passed through the state Senate but failed to make it to the House floor on time, meaning lawmakers will need to revisit it in the next legislative session.
Experts say religious conservatives were buoyed by last year’s Supreme Court ruling that allowed a school football coach to pray with his players at the 50-yard line. The Court held that the First Amendment protected Joseph Kennedy’s prayers with his pupils.
