(ProsperNews.net) – Former House Speaker Paul Ryan agreed with Liz Cheney that President Trump could win a second term and said it would be a “disaster” if he did. The two Republicans spoke out recently saying the party is likely to nominate Trump for the 2024 race but urged GOP members not to go down that road.
Speaking on June 27 to Lester Holt on NBC News, Cheney said, “I’m not going to do anything that helps Donald Trump.” She explained that she believes Trump must be held accountable for the events of January 6, 2021, and condemned him for allegedly keeping classified documents at his home in Florida and then for saying he was lying on a recording that apparently confirmed he shared the contents of a confidential file.
A leaked recording was aired by CNN and contained a conversation involving President Trump stating he had a document containing details of US plans for an attack on Iran. The former President appears to acknowledge that the document was classified. Some prosecutors described the tape as “smoking gun” proof that Trump is guilty of criminal charges brought against him by the Department of Justice for his unlawful handling of the files.
In his defense, Trump said he was not discussing a classified file on the tape but his words merely amounted to “bravado.”
“I didn’t have a classified document. There was no classified document on my desk. If you want to know the truth, it was bravado,” Trump said.
Paul Ryan referred to the former President’s numerous legal battles and insisted he is not fit to be President of the United States. Still, he did acknowledge that many candidates in the Republican race are scared to criticize Trump because they do not want to upset his many supporters in the GOP. Ryan said Republicans would have won the Senate in 2022 if not for Donald Trump and that the former President was also responsible for GOP losses in 2018 and 2020.
