(ProsperNews.net) – Three children in Georgia witnessed their mother’s brutal death as she was mauled by a pack of dogs. One child was also severely injured in the incident that happened just days before Mother’s Day. The tragedy occurred in the small town of Quitman as the family waited for a bus. Brooks County Sheriff’s Office said it responded to panicked calls that minors were under attack by a group of aggressive dogs.
According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, officers arrived to find “several” animals and were informed that a passerby had taken children to hospital. Courtney Williams’ body was found close by.
Initial investigations found that 13 dogs were involved in the incident and that children had flagged down a man driving past, who intervened and frightened the dogs away before taking the children for medical help. The children’s aunt, Crystal Cox, told reporters that one of the boys, Nathan, flagged down the driver. Another boy, Kayden, sustained severe injuries after pushing his little sister to safety and placing himself between her and the animals. His aunt said he was “stapled and stitched up” at the hospital and then sent home to recuperate.
It remains unclear if anyone will face criminal charges over the incident or precisely what caused the young mother’s death, but a local humane society has successfully tracked down nine of the animals involved. A GoFundMe campaign was launched for the family.
The National Center for Health Statistics says there are around 40 to 50 dog-related fatalities in the US every year. The breed most likely to attack is the Pit Bull, which accounts for around 28%. Rottweiler is in second place, followed by the German Shepherd, the Husky, Malamute, Doberman, Chow Chow, the Great Dane, and St. Bernard.
Statistics furthermore show that less than 1% of dog bites result in fatalities, and the majority of victims are young children aged between one and four. This age group accounts for just under 30% of dog-related deaths.
