(ProsperNews.net) – Surfer and actor Tamayo Perry has died in a shark attack in Hawaii. The “Pirates of the Caribbean” star’s body was found by fellow surfers near Goat Island and was missing an arm and a leg. First responders quickly arrived on the scene but could not save Mr. Perry.
Honolulu ocean safety chief Kurt Lager said Perry, who was employed as a lifeguard, was “loved by all” due to his “infectious” personality. Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi called Perry’s death a tragic loss, adding he was a highly respected “legendary waterman.”
The 49-year-old surfer has appeared in several films, including Pirates of the Caribbean, On Stranger Ties, and numerous surfing videos.
Emilia Perry said her husband commonly used his break on a lifeguard shift to indulge his love of surfing among 20-foot high waves. She said he left for work as usual that morning, but later that afternoon, she got a call saying he had died. Mrs. Perry described her shock and stated that she did not believe it was true, but “When I got home, it was real.”
Co-worker and friend Jesse King spoke of Perry’s Christian beliefs and said he and the surfer’s wife had sought solace in their faith.
Mr. Perry was the ninth person to die in a Hawaii shark attack since records began in 1995. Two days after his death, a 20-year-old was injured while swimming in Anaeho’omalu Bay in Waikoloa. The Romanian tourist noticed a pain in his foot and found severe lacerations bleeding heavily. Medical first responders confirmed that the injuries were consistent with a shark bite.
Hawaii’s Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) says shark attacks are “very rare,” but conceded that Mr. Perry’s and the tourist’s were the fifth and sixth this year.
In a separate instance on June 7, a swimmer was bitten on his thigh, hand, and forearm. Officials described the incident as provoked – when humans approach a shark and attempt to initiate physical contact.
