(ProsperNews.net) – Taxpayers in Maine are footing the bill as migrants are given apartments rent-free. Maine State Housing Authority, funded by taxes, will pay rent for illegal immigrants to live in plush new apartments in Brunswick. The state has budgeted $3.5 million to house 60 migrant families and a further $100,000 to help them with their applications for asylum and work authorization.
The migrants will be housed for free while Americans remain homeless, partly due to high housing costs. A survey last year revealed there are around 4,200 homeless US citizens in Maine, including 1,000 who have not had a home for many years. The average cost of a home in the Pine Tree State is $350,000, which is rising due to growing demand.
Meanwhile, several states are urging locals to open up their houses to illegal immigrants. Last summer, New York Mayor Eric Adams, who frequently complains that immigration is destroying the Big Apple, called on New Yorkers to shelter immigrants in their homes. Adams even suggested that if people opened up their residences, it would allow him to pull back on significant spending cuts he implemented to help fund hotel rooms for border jumpers. A spokesperson for the Mayor did not respond when asked if Adams was willing to take migrants into his home.
Similarly, in Massachusetts, Governor Maura Healey said that the number of people housed in the Bay State’s emergency shelter system has risen by 80% in a single year; she also requested that people allow the migrants to live with them. Lt. Governor Kim Driscol said, “If you have an extra room or suite in your home, please consider hosting a family.”
In Michigan last December, pro-migration activist groups, including the African Bureau for Immigration and Social Affairs, said, “Community members have been picking people off the street and taking them into their own homes.” Breitbart News pointed out that federal law does not permit two families in a single-family home.
