(ProsperNews.net) – New York Rep. Jamaal Bowman faces expulsion from the House of Representatives after cameras caught him apparently setting off a fire alarm as House members were preparing to vote on a bill to prevent a government shutdown. The incident happened as Republicans rushed through a bill known as a continuing resolution to provide short-term funding until a firm agreement can be reached. The bill passed, and government spending is assured until a deadline of November 17.
Republican Rep. Nicole Malliotakis said she will present a resolution to the House asking for Mr. Bowman’s eviction, saying, “This is the United States Congress. It’s not a New York City public high school.” She pointed out that former school principal Rep. Bowman should know better than anyone that such a stunt would lead to a pupil’s expulsion.
Malliotakis also pointed out that Democrats were doing all they could to delay a vote that afternoon, probably to gain the political capital of blaming the GOP for a government shutdown. The Republican cited delaying tactics, including an exceptionally long speech by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and a motion to adjourn by Democratic Representatives.
Rep. Malliotakis is joined by Rep. Harriet Hageman and Rep. Lisa McClain, who together will co-draft a resolution for Mr. Bowman’s expulsion. They will need a simple majority of members to vote in favor of the resolution to secure their aim.
Firebrand Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene has gone further and called for Mr. Bowman to be prosecuted. “Jamaal Bowman must be treated exactly the same as January 6 defendants,” she said. Former President Donald Trump agreed and said he should be “prosecuted and imprisoned.”
Congressman Bowman denies wrongdoing and said he did not realize the lever he pulled would set off the alarms. He said he mistakenly believed the device would open a door and apologized for the “confusion.” The lever in question is bright red and has FIRE written just above it.
