(ProsperNews.net) – Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene’s impeachment effort against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas failed after Democrats blocked the measure with the help of a small group of Republicans. The vote to impeach Mayorkas failed by just eight votes, with the final vote count being 209 against and 201 for. An additional 24 Representatives did not vote either way.
Green sought to impeach Mayorkas for mishandling the southern United States border, as Mayorkas oversees the ongoing border crisis under the Biden Administration. Had Green’s attempted impeachment passed in the House of Representatives, the Senate would have held a trial on the attempted impeachment.
Homeland Security responded to Greene’s failed impeachment, calling it a “waste of time.” According to the Department of Homeland Security, immigration agents are working hard to prevent illegal immigration and drug smuggling into the United States. The department also claims that Congress needs to focus on providing Homeland Security with funding and reforming the immigration policies that enabled the ongoing crisis at the southern United States border.
Homeland Security defended Mayorkas directly, claiming he’s “laser-focused” on preventing illegal immigration and protecting the United States’ interests. The department also claims that Mayorkas is working diligently to prevent fentanyl from crossing into the United States due to the drug’s increased presence in the country over the past few years.
Despite the Department of Homeland Security’s avid defense of Mayorkas, immigration is at a record high under his leadership. In September, there were over 260,000 encounters with immigrants at the southern border. According to Mayorkas, an additional 60,000 immigrants avoided law enforcement and successfully crossed into the country.
Republican lawmakers, like Greene, are calling for extensive immigration reform due to the ongoing surge of immigration. According to Republicans, the historic surge in illegal immigration poses a threat to national security and the safety of United States citizens. Despite Greene’s unsuccessful impeachment attempt, Mayorkas will likely face additional challenges in the coming weeks.
The impeachment effort against Mayorkas came while the secretary testified before the House Homeland Security Committee. FBI Director Christopher Wray joined Mayorkas, along with other witnesses, to speak about national security threats to the United States.
