Secret Service Director Urged to Resign Post Trump Attack

(ProsperNews.net) – The Director of the US Secret Service has faced calls to resign in the wake of the Donald Trump assassination attempt. Kimberley Cheatle, who took over the leadership in 2022, has encountered fierce criticism over what many see as significant security failures at the Pennsylvania rally at which Trump was shot in the ear and a bystander was killed. Cheatle’s previous role was with the soda giant PepsiCo, where she led security efforts for its North American facilities. Before that, she spent 27 years with the Secret Service in various roles, including Assistant Director of the Office of Protective Operations.

Several social media users, including those with security experience, commented that the rally’s shooter, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, was able to get a clear shot of Donald Trump from 130 meters away, signaling a substantial security lapse.

Lawmakers on the House Oversight Committee said it would subpoena Ms. Cheatle to appear at a July 22 hearing on Capitol Hill. A spokeswoman for the Committee told reporters that Cheatle “must answer to Congress and the American people about the historic failure that occurred on her watch.”

Subsequent reports indicate that the roof from which Crooks aimed his rifle at Trump was unguarded, which Cheatle justified by saying it was an unsafe location to place a Secret Service agent because the roof was sloped.

Despite intense criticism of her reasoning, Ms. Cheatle has so far resisted calls for her resignation. She admitted, however, that the Pennsylvania events were “unacceptable” and “something that shouldn’t happen again.” Conceding that the “buck stops” with her, the Secret Service Director insisted she would remain in her post.

Meanwhile, a subdued Donald Trump attended the RNC in Milwaukee to a rapturous welcome from his GOP colleagues. The former President has called for unity, and many of his primary rivals, including Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley, delivered speeches enthusiastically endorsing Mr. Trump and urging the Republican Party to unite behind his leadership.
