Schumer Blasts Supreme Court’s Trump Immunity Decision

(ProsperNews.net) – Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has expressed outrage at the US Supreme Court ruling that granted partial immunity to Donald Trump. The ruling declared that while the US President is not above the law, he cannot face the threat of prosecution for official Presidential acts. Lower courts will now determine which acts related to Trump’s alleged attempts to interfere with the 2020 Presidential election result were official and which were not.

Mr. Schumer labeled the Court the “MAGA SCOTUS” and condemned the three Justices appointed by Donald Trump, all of whom agreed to grant immunity. Dissenting Justices were scathing about the decision. Justice Sonya Sotomayor accused her colleagues of undermining the principle that no man is above the law and fundamentally altering the US Presidency. Senator Schumer agreed and tweeted that the Supreme Court’s credibility is questionable, adding, “Political influence trumps all in our courts today.”

Senior Democrats in Washington have pledged to legislate in response to the Court’s ruling, aiming to ensure “that the extreme, far-right justices in the majority are brought into compliance with the Constitution.” House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said Democrats will respond to the ruling “aggressively” with various legislative proposals, which experts say are unlikely to pass through the Republican-controlled House.

Rep. Dan Goldman of New York has appealed to House Speaker Mike Johnson to press onward with proposals to create an ethics enforcement counsel for the Supreme Court. Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman of New Jersey called for the Court’s expansion and a binding code of conduct, and Rep. Hank Johnson proposed term limits.

Rep. Joe Morelle, also of New York, went further and said he intends to fight for a Constitutional amendment to reserve the Supreme Court’s decision on Trump’s immunity.

Several Democrats have called for change and claim the Supreme Court is increasingly biased in favor of conservatives. Rulings that overturned Roe v Wade, allowed prayers in public schools, and extended gun rights have infuriated many Democrat supporters.
