(ProsperNews.net) – Republican Senator Marco Rubio said mass deportations from the United States may be necessary. Speaking to reporters, Mr. Rubio said the numbers that have entered the US during the Biden administration have prompted him to alter his view on a policy he has previously described as unrealistic. The Floridian Senator expressed support for Donald Trump’s plan to round up and send millions of illegal immigrants home, which the former President describes as the largest deportation exercise in American history.
“We cannot absorb 25, 30 million people who entered this country illegally,” Rubio said. However, when he challenged Donald Trump for the GOP nomination in 2016, the Senator described mass deportation plans as “not workable.”
Throughout the 2016 primaries, Rubio accused Trump of lacking conservative values and of exploiting people’s fears for political gain. He also referred to illegal immigrants as “human beings who have been here for a long time,” but now believes current migration figures are unsustainable. The Senator likewise previously rejected the notion that Americans would accept a policy of rounding people up and holding them in detention to await deportation.
Nevertheless, Donald Trump said he intends to do just that if he re-enters the White House after November’s elections. The Republican stated that the National Guard, backed up by the US military, will lead the operation to deport between 15 and 20 million. Mr. Trump referred to migration as an “invasion” and said he would use federal funding to force local law enforcement to assist in deportation efforts. The former President did note, however, that he will abide by any related Supreme Court rulings.
Critics believe that Trump’s policy would detrimentally impact the economy as millions of workers would disappear. Economists say widespread employment is necessary for further job creation, and millions of Americans could become unemployed under the migration plans. The Congressional Research Service furthermore stated that Trump’s plan would cause immense disruption in families comprised of both migrants and US citizens.
