(ProsperNews.net) – A Republican critic of Donald Trump has won a GOP primary in New Hampshire. Gerry Leonard was selected to stand for the Republicans in a special election for the 1st Congressional District of the Granite State. Leonard is a marine veteran and political newcomer, and he will now face off against Democrat Gabo Amo in the November 7 election.
In the early days of his campaign, when asked about Trump and the indictments the former President is facing, Mr. Leonard said, “I believe there’s nobody that’s above the law in the United States.” When questioned if he supported Mr. Trump’s 2024 campaign, he said there are “plenty of good candidates, great candidates, on the Republican side.”
Republicans in New Hampshire are at odds about Trump and a row broke out last month regarding his eligibility to be on the ballot in the first-in-the-nation primary-voting state. GOP chairman Chris Aker clashed with former US Senate nominee Bryant “Corky” Messner about Trump’s right to appear on the ballot paper. Messner said he wants the courts to decide on the issue. “I quite frankly believe it is in Donald Trump’s best interest to get this looked at as quickly as possible,” he said.
Chris Ager believes any attempt to sideline Trump in the Granite State will have “no legs whatsoever.” The chairman added that he is confident all candidates will be included.
Former President Trump is enjoying a popularity boost after the latest indictment from Georgia and the first prison mugshot of a US President ever produced. His opponents are increasingly floating the idea that the 14th Amendment can expel Mr. Trump from the White House race. The Amendment disallows anyone who has “engaged in insurrection” from occupying the Oval Office.
Democrats have previously introduced a bill seeking to bar Trump, and more recently, Senators and House Representatives have repeated the call. Several liberal journalists and commentators insist that the 14th Amendment applies and Trump should be disqualified.
Trump calls the argument “absurd.”
