(ProsperNews.net) – The Iranian government announced that Israel killed a senior member of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) during a Syrian airstrike in December. Reza Mousawi, a high-ranking general, died in a strike in the Sayida Zeinab neighborhood in Damascus, Iran said. Israel has not commented, but media reports claim Mousawi was a crucial figure in the coordination of Iranian and Syrian military alliances.
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said the death would be avenged and described it as “a sign of the Zionist regime’s frustration and weakness in the region.” A statement from the Revolutionary Guard declared, “The usurper and savage Zionist regime will pay for this crime.”
Mousawi was “one of the oldest advisors of IRGC in Syria” and a close associate of Qassem Soleimani, the former leader of IRGC who was killed by American troops during the Trump administration.
Dr. Mohammed Al-Sulami, founder and president of the International Institute for Iranian Studies, said, “I would call Mousavi the second Qassem Soleimani. He knew everybody, had good contacts with people on the ground, militias, and heads of groups.”
Razi Mousavi was buried to chants of “Death to Israel” and “Death to America” in the Iranian capital, Tehran, on December 28, where Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said a prayer over his body. The Syrian government, meanwhile, described his death as “martyrdom” and called on the United Nations to take action against Israel because its actions risk “igniting the region.”
Since the terrorist attack on Israeli civilians on October 7 last year, Iran-backed groups from across the region have launched attacks against the Jewish state, and clashes between the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) and Iran-financed terror group Hezbollah intensified over Christmas.
Houthi rebels from Yemen simultaneously attacked US and international ships in the Red Sea, saying the actions were an expression of solidarity with the Palestinian people. The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, also funded by Iran, has launched more than 100 attacks on Israeli and US bases in the region since October 7.
