(ProsperNews.net) – Former White House lawyers from former Republican administrations of Presidents Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, and George W. Bush have come forward to endorse the Democratic Party candidate Vice President Kamala Harris as she takes on Republican contender former President Donald Trump’s third run for the White House.
At least a dozen GOP White House attorneys from previous Republican administrations are throwing their lot in with Harris and published a joint letter announcing their intentions. That letter said the lawyers endorse Harris and “support her election” because they believe returning Trump to office “would threaten American democracy and undermine the rule of law” in the US. The former White House attorneys published the letter the day after Harris spoke at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago and delivered her acceptance speech for the party’s nomination.
The letter’s signatories urged “all patriotic” former and current Republicans, as well as those who are “conservative and center-right,” along with independent voters, to support Harris, an act they claim places “love of country above party and ideology.”
Among the signatories is conservative legal scholar Michael Luttig, who worked as a federal appeals court judge and served as Reagan’s assistant counsel. When the DNC kicked off, he made headlines by becoming one of the first GOP members to openly endorse Harris at the convention.
The letter points out that former Vice President Mike Pence also chose not to endorse his former boss, and that “multiple members” of the Trump administration and White House Staff declined to back the former president’s reelection bid. The signatories claim Trump’s returning to office poses “profound risks” and note other former officials who consider him “unfit for office,” as well as “dangerous.” The letter then points to the events of Jan. 6, 2021, and accuses Trump of trying to overturn the results of the 2020 election and to stop the certification of President Joe Biden’s victory.
The attorneys accuse the former president of placing “his personal interests above the law” and the Constitution by trying to stop “the peaceful transfer of power.”
On Tuesday, Aug. 27, special counsel Jack Smith introduced a new, revised indictment against Trump accusing him of such after the original one was tossed out by the Supreme Court, which determined that Trump has presidential immunity from prosecution for some of the actions included in the original indictment. The new version refines the charges to a narrower set of allegations.
