(ProsperNews.net) – Prosecutors in Donald Trump’s falsifying documents case have outlined their case against the former President, saying he conspired to “promote an election.” To convict Mr. Trump, prosecution attorneys must show that he falsified documents in the furtherance of a crime. They argued that Trump committed that crime when he unlawfully attempted to promote his own election campaign.
Matthew Colangelo stated that after announcing his plans to run for President, Trump met with the CEO of American Medic Inc. (AMI) and his attorney, Michael Cohen, and the three men plotted to conceal potentially harmful information about Mr. Trump. The prosecutor said they employed a practice known as “catch and kill,” which involves buying information and obliging the seller to sign a non-disclosure agreement. Colangelo claimed that this method was used three times.
The prosecutor explained that the first occasion concerned a Trump Tower doorman who claimed to have information about a child Donald Trump had fathered. Additionally, former Playboy model Karen McDougal was allegedly paid to conceal a prior romantic relationship with the former President, and adult film star Stormy Daniels received $130,000 to cover up a sexual encounter.
In response, Trump’s attorneys insisted there is nothing illegal about paying for non-disclosure agreements or trying to influence the outcome of an election. Todd Blanche told the court, “It’s called democracy.”
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court heard arguments that Trump enjoys Presidential immunity and is therefore protected from prosecution. Justices presided for more than two hours and appeared to suggest that Trump has some, but not total or absolute immunity. Justice Samuel Alito, for example, said Presidents are vulnerable to persecution by successors if there is no protection.
Chief Justice John Roberts agreed and said that persuading a grand jury to indict a former President is unlikely to be difficult. He added that “reliance on the good faith of the prosecutor may not be enough.”
Trump’s attorney, D. John Sauer, argued that without immunity, “there can be no Presidency as we know it.”
