(ProsperNews.net) – Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi described the latest indictment of Donald Trump as “heartbreaking” for America. Pelosi, a staunch critic of Mr. Trump, said, “It’s heartbreaking for our country to have a President of the United States with this list of charges against him.” She commended the January 6 Congressional committee which she said had laid down the facts, clarified the law, and opened the door for prosecutors to pursue their case against the former President.
The Californian Democrat was speaking a day after the Department of Justice indicted President Trump to face his second set of federal charges this year. These relate to his alleged attempts to disrupt the transfer of power to President Biden; charges include conspiring to obstruct official proceedings and to defraud the US.
Meanwhile, the Republican National Committee has posted a 24-minute-long clip on its Twitter account showing prominent Democrats arguing that the Presidential election of 2000 was won by Al Gore and stolen by George W Bush. Prominent Democrats are also seen declaring Mr. Trump’s Presidency “illegitimate” and repeatedly telling supporters that “the Russians” and others interfered with the 2016 election campaign.
Republicans have been largely supportive of the former President, although his Vice President Mike Pence repeated his claim that Trump considered himself more important than the Constitution and deserved to face criminal sanction. Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis, who is in second place in the GOP nomination polls, faced criticism from colleagues for an “underwhelming” response. DeSantis said he did not read the indictment but said it is unfair to hold a trial in Washington, DC because it reflects a “swamp mentality.”
Fellow Republican contender Vivek Ramaswamy committed to pardoning Mr. Trump if he is elected to the White House, while House Speaker Kevin McCarthy called it a dark day for the United States. “It is unconscionable for a President to indict the leading candidate opposing him. I, and every American who believes in the rule of law, stand with President Trump against this grave injustice,” he said.
