Paloma Faith Slams Little Mermaid Upon Release

(ProsperNews.net) – Singer and actress Paloma Faith slammed the new Disney movie, The Little Mermaid, as a bad example for young girls. “As a mother of girls, I don’t want my kids to think it’s ok to give up your entire voice and your powers to love a man,” she wrote on Instagram. She was ridiculed on social media when a tweet she wrote in 2009 resurfaced. This one said, “When I grow up, I want to be The Little Mermaid.”

The film stars Oscar-winner Halle Berry and portrays the life of a Mermaid who falls in love with a Prince and wants to live with him on land. She approaches a witch, played by Melissa McCarthy, to help her get there.

McCarthy describes her character as “100% inspired by drag queens.”

The official trailer for the movie was not promising and received over a million “dislikes” on YouTube. Disney star Josh Gad blamed “MAGA racists” for the negativity. It did better on its opening weekend and took $117 million at the American box office, although its reception elsewhere was less positive.

Internationally, over Memorial Day Weekend, the film grossed just $68 million – far less than a Disney movie would usually be expected to generate. It made $2.5 million in China, $4 million in both Brazil and Australia, $6 million in the UK, $4 million in Italy, and just over $8 million in Mexico.

Disney’s power has fallen in recent years, and some commentators blame an injection of “wokeness” into the pictures. For example, the company lost more than $300 million on its two previous releases. Strange World, launched in 2022, lost Disney almost $200 million. The movie focuses on a globe-trotting family and their adventures with their disabled dog. The main character, a teenage boy, enters a gay relationship.

A spin-off of Toy Story, Lightyear, also flopped. It too included a gay romance. Critics on online forums accused the film of trying to teach young children about adult themes.
