Over 80,000 Slices of Kraft Cheese Recalled

(ProsperNews.net) – Food company Kraft Heinz has recalled packets of cheese slices after customers complained they were a choking hazard. No injuries were reported, but Kraft Heinz decided to call back more than 84,000 boxes of the affected cheese. Each pack contains individual slices wrapped in plastic.

A statement from the company read, “The voluntary recall comes as a precaution after a temporary issue developed on one of our wrapping machines, making it possible that a thin strip of the individual film may remain on the slice after the wrapper has been removed.”

The statement reassured people that the relevant wrapping machine had been fixed and no other products were affected. The company asked customers to return packages and collect a refund. The recall only applies to 16-ounce Kraft Singles American Pasteurized Prepared Cheese Products, with a “best when used by” date between 10 and 27 January 2024.

Kraft Heinz announced earlier in the year that it was rethinking the plastic wrapping on the individual cheese slices because struggling to open the product is the number one complaint from consumers. Also planned for 2023 are a logo redesign and an update on the product description to make it more transparent that the cheese does not have artificial flavors.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) keeps an up-to-date list of products that companies have decided to recall, and so far in September 2023, twelve items have made the list. The day before Kraft Heinz recalled their cheese, David’s Cookies called back its MarketSide cookies because a batch with ingredients including undeclared peanuts was distributed. A few days before that, Knickerbocker 365 recalled Homestyle Hamburger Buns due to an undeclared allergen.

The most expensive such incident in US history occurred in 2008 when 143 million pounds of beef were recalled after a video surfaced showing cows moving through a factory on a forklift, unable to walk. Rumors of “mad cow disease” spread, panic ensued, and a $497 million lawsuit resulted.
