(ProsperNews.net) – Detective Allan Reddins of the Oak Park Police Department was fatally shot on Friday while responding to an armed suspect outside a Chase Bank. The incident marks the first line-of-duty death for the department since 1938 and has left the community mourning the loss of a dedicated officer.
Reddins, 40, was among the officers who confronted the suspect, identified as 37-year-old Jerell Thomas, outside the bank. When officers ordered Thomas to show his hands, he allegedly drew a gun and opened fire, striking Reddins. The detective was rushed to Loyola University Medical Center in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries shortly after.
Thomas, who has a lengthy criminal record, was shot in the leg during the encounter and was taken into custody. He is in stable condition and has been charged with first-degree murder.
Detective Reddins joined the Oak Park Police Department in 2019 and quickly earned a reputation as a “natural-born leader,” according to Police Chief Shatonya Johnson. She praised his investigative skills and described him as a committed professional and loving father. Reddins leaves behind a 19-year-old son, his mother, and several siblings.
The Village of Oak Park has expressed its deep condolences to Reddins’ family and colleagues, calling his death a senseless act of violence. Community members and local officials have united in grief, honoring Reddins’ service and sacrifice.
The tragedy underscores the dangers faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty and has prompted renewed calls for community support and vigilance. Detective Reddins’ dedication to protecting his community will be remembered as his department and loved ones navigate this profound loss.
