(ProsperNews.net) – New York City Mayor Eric Adams has slashed the police budget as the cost of illegal migration begins to bite. Adams has previously said immigration is “destroying” the Big Apple, and in recent announcements, he described “painful” funding cuts that must be made. The Mayor blames the migration crisis on the federal government while continuing to maintain New York’s “sanctuary city” status.
Almost 120,000 migrants have arrived in New York since last fall, many of them bussed there by southern Republicans as their states take the brunt of the open-border policies endorsed by Democrats. Over the summer, Mayor Adams said New Yorkers would need to shell out around $12 billion to meet the costs of accommodating and caring for new arrivals.
Budget announcements now reveal that the New York Police Department (NYPD) will see its funding cut by 13% and officer numbers drop to just 29,000 by 2025. Meanwhile, felony crimes are rising and are up 6% from last year and 35% from pre-pandemic levels.
Patrick Hendry, president of the Police Benevolent Association of the City of New York, said, “This is truly a disaster for every New Yorker who cares about safe streets.”
The budget cuts were decided in the Mayor’s November Financial Plan, which passed through the City Council in June. On top of police cutbacks, the Department of Sanitation will also see its budget slashed and trash pickups reduced, library opening hours will be cut, and the Education Department’s budget will fall by $1 billion over two years.
At the southern border, migrant numbers continue to explode and break previous records. US Customs and Border Protection officers say encounters at the border increased by 67% between July and September. Between the fall of 2022 and 2023, there were 2.4 million migrant apprehensions – an all-time high. The number of people in the US who were born elsewhere also rose to a record high of 46 million between 2022 and 2023.
