(ProsperNews.net) – New York’s Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul has announced the availability of 18,000 jobs that asylum seekers could fill. She said the Department of Labor identified unfilled roles at 379 private sector companies throughout the state that can now be filled by asylum seekers granted legal work status.
Around a quarter of the jobs are in accommodation and food, with a further 21% in healthcare, 10% in manufacturing, and 8% in administrative support. At a press conference, Hochul told reporters that 125,000 people had not previously been permitted to work, but now businesses must step up and employ asylum seekers so they do not continue to strain the public purse. She reiterated her previous call to Congress to “open up more work authorizations.”
House Republican Chair Rep. Elise Stefanik condemned the Governor’s statements as yet more incentivization for illegal migrants to enter the United States. “While New Yorkers are demanding border security, Hochul is worsening the crisis with her failed Sanctuary State policies. Enough is enough,” she said.
Hochul has insisted that the solution to the migrant crisis facing New York is “so simple, crystal clear.” She said the answer is jobs and a “shot at the American dream.” Speaking of Venezuela, the Governor noted its people once enjoyed a prosperous way of life until “dictator” Nicolás Madura rose to power. “Crime, gangs took over the streets, political chaos, economic decline, and the loss of oil, their country spiraled, and that’s why people are fleeing,” she said.
New York City has tens of thousands of migrants currently in its care, and Mayor Eric Adams has warned the crisis will “destroy” the Big Apple. The Mayor recently announced the city would no longer house single migrants for longer than two months – potentially exacerbating the homelessness emergency that has plagued NYC since a massive influx began last spring. “If the understanding is you’re not guaranteed a place to stay, that affects the flow,” Adams said.
