Nikki Haley Plans to Exit GOP Primary Race

(ProsperNews.net) – The only remaining Republican to compete against Donald Trump for the GOP nomination suspended her campaign following sweeping losses on Super Tuesday, March 5. Nikki Haley lost in every state except Vermont, and her exit announcement notably did not endorse Trump but accused him of fostering division in the Republican party. She said it is now up to Donald Trump to persuade those Republicans who do not support him to change their minds. “Politics is about bringing people into your cause, not turning them away,” she said.

Haley remained in the race despite losses in New Hampshire, Iowa, and her home state of South Carolina because she believed anti-Trump Republicans needed an alternative, and because polls repeatedly show that Americans are not keen on a rematch between Trump and Biden.

Ms. Haley lashed out at Trump in early March when he said he would not welcome her supporters into the MAGA faction of the party, a move she said was “a recipe for extinction in the long run.” During a speech in Virginia, Mr. Trump claimed that 96% of Republicans support the MAGA movement, adding, “We’re getting rid of the Romneys of the world.” Trump and Utah Senator Mitt Romney are firm opponents, and Mr. Romney has consistently maintained his opposition to the former President.

Soon afterward, however, Mr. Trump appears to have had a change of heart and invited Haley supporters to join him in the “greatest movement in the history of our nation.” The GOP frontrunner said he had “trounced” his former UN ambassador and claimed that most of her support came from “radical left Democrats.”

Republican National Committee leader Ronna McDaniel took a diplomatic stance following Super Tuesday’s Trump victory. She congratulated both candidates and noted, in particular, that Nikki Haley had become the first woman to win a GOP primary when she secured victory in Washington, DC, and Vermont. She said Haley had run a hard-fought campaign that deserved recognition.
