(ProsperNews.net) – The NFL has announced a “Pride Night” in the run-up to the Super Bowl. In a press release, the National Football League said it would partner with the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) to host the event, which vodka maker Smirnoff will sponsor.
The press statement described the event as an “evening of music, cocktails, and interview-style conversations” with members of GLAAD – a group that advocates for LGBT rights. The NFL said it is committed to “LGBTQ” inclusion for former and current football players.
Notice of the event was posted to Twitter but was not well received. Most responders accused the NFL of selling out to “wokeness,” while others said very few people would bother to watch or attend.
The Pride Night could prompt a protest similar to that which erupted when GLAAD teamed up with the LA Dodgers last year. The Dodgers hosted a pride event in June and invited a controversial drag queen group that includes members who dress as outrageous caricatures of nuns. The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence were invited, then uninvited following protests, and then invited again following yet more protests.
In re-issuing their invitation, the Dodgers apologized and said, “We have asked the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence to take their place on the field at our 10th annual LGBTQ+ Pride Night.”
Catholics offended by the drag group’s portrayal of nuns accused the Dodgers of exhibiting “anti-Catholic hate,” and dozens turned up to demonstrate at the Dodger’s stadium on the evening of the event.
Archbishop José Gomez of Los Angeles, Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York, and the president of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, Timothy Broglio, issued a joint statement calling the drag queen inclusion “offensive” and urged Catholics to pray for God to forgive the blasphemy exhibited in modern American culture.
Floridian Senator Marco Rubio expressed support for the protestors and said the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence mocked the Catholic faith.
