(ProsperNews.net) – Texas Governor Greg Abbott has announced the construction of a new military base on the US border. The Forward Operating Base on the Del Rio border sector will house National Guard soldiers deployed to tackle the migrant crisis. At a press conference, Mr. Abbott said the Texas Military Department secured 80 acres in Eagle Pass for the base, which will be home to 2,300 soldiers, who will have their own rooms, health services, recreation facilities, and a dining hall.
Adjutant General of Texas Major Thomas Suelzer said, “In the coming weeks, we will also be expanding operations north and south of Eagle Pass.” Governor Abbott added that the new base is needed because soldiers are currently scattered throughout the state and living in substandard conditions.
On local radio, Governor Abbott said his goal is to expand “the effectiveness of that razor wire to more areas along this border,” indicating that he intends to continue defying a Supreme Court order to take down the wire, bringing him into further conflict with the federal establishment.
In January, the US Supreme Court ruled that federal immigration agents could remove the wire installed at Del Rio, but Texan troops would not allow it. In response to the ruling, Greg Abbott began placing more razor wire along the border and won the support of several Republican Governors nationwide. Florida’s Ron DeSantis sent his state’s National Guard to reinforce Texas, while more than two dozen Governors signed a joint statement backing Mr. Abbott.
The Lone Star State has been on the front line of the migrant crisis since record numbers began crossing in 2021. That year, Governor Abbott launched Operation Lone Star, which involved deploying the National Guard and Texas Department of Public Safety to the border. Abbott said its purpose was to “repel illegal crossings” and prevent the import of the deadly drug Fentanyl into the United States. Abbott has long accused the federal government of ignoring the crisis.
