Mother Defends 12-Year-Old Son Accused of Stabbing Woman

(ProsperNews.net) – A Texas mother defended her 12-year-old son after he allegedly stabbed a 59-year-old neighbor. She said he is “just a boy” who will learn from his mistakes. The child reportedly argued with a woman outside her home in April Valley Court, Houston, on March 24 and later returned with a knife to attack her.

Speaking to reporters after the incident, his mother said she was sorry it happened and felt sorrow for the victim’s family. She explained that her son suffered from “mental problems” but was coping well in police custody.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez later confirmed that the 12-year-old was charged with aggravated assault but would not reveal his identity. His 7-year-old brother, who was with him at the time of the stabbing, was not charged and is considered a witness. His mother said the younger child was traumatized by the incident.

The victim, who reportedly also suffers from mental illness, sustained several knife wounds to her abdomen and is in critical condition. CCTV footage from neighboring homes shows the two boys fleeing the scene on bicycles. A neighbor told reporters she was shocked by the stabbing and explained that the woman’s brother, who checks on her daily, arrived just in time and was able to save his sister’s life.

The incident happened in Northwest Harris County, where prosecutors last year released data showing a disturbing rise in violent crimes committed by children and teenagers. Juvenile Justice Division Chief John Jordan particularly noted what he called a “surge in homicides.” He explained that in 2020, juveniles committed 14 homicides in the county, but this figure rose to 21 two years later. By mid-2023, the number was already up to 24.

Furthermore, data from the District Attorney’s office showed that in 2017, most juvenile offenses were misdemeanors, but by 2023, the majority were felonies. District Attorney Kim Ogg said early intervention was vital. She said the sooner children are held accountable, the less likely they will pursue a life of crime.
