(ProsperNews.net) – Newly-elected Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson has confirmed his commitment to pursuing the impeachment of President Biden. In a speech to the House in September, Mr. Johnson gave three primary reasons for his view. He maintained that President Biden had lied to the American people, that his family profited from overseas business dealings, and federal agencies conspired to cover up any wrongdoing.
Johnson also lashed out at the media, who he said were “trying to convince the American people that our inquiry, even the impeachment inquiry, is illegitimate.”
Former Speaker Kevin McCarthy announced the formal impeachment procedure in September, saying the GOP had unearthed a “culture of corruption” surrounding President Biden. The House Oversight Committee had been investigating the Biden family’s business dealings for months and accused his son, Hunter Biden, of “selling” access to his father and his influence.
Part of the investigation focuses on Hunter Biden’s relationship with Ukrainian gas company Burisma – he sat on the company’s board despite having no experience or expertise in the industry. James Comer, chairman of the Oversight Committee, accused then-Vice President Biden of engineering the dismissal of Ukrainian prosecutor Viktor Shokin because Mr. Shokin was investigating corruption at Burisma.
In a tweet on September 12, the Committee stated that Joe Biden made Mr. Shokin’s firing a condition for an aid package worth $1 billion. A letter from James Comer to Secretary of State Antony Blinken accompanied the tweet; the letter stated that Biden family associate Devon Archer testified to the House Committee that Hunter Biden pressured his father to “deliver help from the US Government.”
President Biden’s response has been to accuse Republicans of seeking to “shut down the government.” A White House memo to reporters urged them to “scrutinize House Republicans’ demonstrably false claims.” Spokesperson Ian Sims, who produced the memo, said the allegations against President Biden were “all politics and no evidence.” He called for the GOP to be held to account for its “disproven” allegations.
