(ProsperNews.net) – A Texas Sheriff has said his officers are overwhelmed amid the migrant crisis, and he does not have the staff to deal with it effectively as well as tend to regular duties. Maverick County Sheriff Tom Schmerber described the crisis at the southern border as a “real bad situation,” adding that he feels sympathy for Border Patrol agents. “I can see in their faces that they’re tired of this situation. It’s bad,” he said.
Mr. Schmerber added that the people in his community are increasingly afraid of the crimes committed by border crossers, saying local people have experienced burglaries and there had even been a homicide involving newly-arrived immigrants. He called on Congress and the federal government to act.
Migrant numbers continue to break records at the border, and Texas is particularly severely affected. More than 12,000 crossed in a single day in mid-December, the highest number yet. Images showing thousands waiting to jump aboard trains bound for Texas showed there is little sign of the crisis abating, and lawmakers were told recently that people from more than 100 countries are among those arriving.
In Washington, Republicans continue to pressure the White House to agree to reforms as legislation aimed partly at funding Ukraine is stalled by GOP refusal to support it without action on immigration.
A group of conservatives, however, is warning Republicans not to water down demands or agree to less than the implementation of the Secure the Border Act, which will restart the construction of a wall and end the migrant parole system.
The group comprises the Heritage Foundation, former acting Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Mark Morgan, former acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Tom Homan, former acting Deputy DHS Secretary Ken Cuccinelli, and former Border Patrol Chief Rodney Scott. They argue that the Secure the Border Act is the “bare minimum required to regain control of America’s southern border and provide credibility for our nation’s immigration system.”
