Obama listed issues that she sees as pressing concerns, including the advance of artificial intelligence, the amount of time people spend on their phones, wars across the globe, and climate change. She also pondered if enough people were voting and, if not, why not.
In her remarks about the government, Mrs. Obama stated that people misunderstand the importance of government and leaders, and advised that Americans choose their leaders wisely because politicians are responsible for “everything.”
Obama is one of many high-profile voices to express growing fear at the 2024 Presidential election result as Democrats begin driving the message home that Trump is dangerous. Vice President Kamala Harris said she is “scared as heck” at the prospect of a second Trump White House, and Democrats must not shy away from fighting him. Speaking on NBC, Harris said, “We don’t run away from something when we’re scared. We fight back against it.”
According to the Washington Post, former President Obama has also expressed private concerns to President Biden and warned him that Trump could win because of his “political strengths.” Obama said the polarization of America is helping Donald Trump, whom he believes is exploiting those divisions.
Some left-leaning commentators are increasing their criticisms of Trump and warning that he will turn the United States into a “banana republic.” Writing for the left-wing Guardian, former New York Times editor Margaret Sullivan said Mr. Trump could use the US military to punish his opponents, and blamed the media for failing to alert Americans to his apparent destructive plans. “If more citizens truly understood the stakes, there would be no real contest
between these candidates,” she wrote.
Fresh from his 51% victory in the Iowa caucuses, former President Trump’s confidence is high as more and more polls show a solid lead over President Biden.
