(ProsperNews.net) – A Mexican national connected to a shooting in Montgomery, Alabama, was arrested over the weekend on accusations of shooting another resident from behind.
Police arrested 46-year-old Alberto Martinez-Fidel on Monday, Aug. 5, and charged him with assault after a shooting on Sunday, Aug. 4, which left a resident in Montgomery seriously injured. Martinez-Fidel reportedly shot the victim in the back and his buttocks. He was charged with assault and booked at the Montgomery County Detention Facility.
Law enforcement did not provide much information about the victim but court records indicate the victim was struck at close range by bullets from a handgun. The court set bond for Martinez-Fidel at $30,000.
A US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) spokesperson confirmed that Martinez-Fidel was originally from Mexico and entered the US illegally. That spokesperson told reporters that ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Office (ERO) had filed a detainer on Martinez-Fidel on Aug. 5, 2024, following his arrest, and that the organization had no “previous immigration information” about him.
Detainers are requests by ICE for state or local law enforcement to inform ICE before an illegal immigrant is released following a crime. The detainer comes with an arrest warrant authorized by Congress and also allows the state or local agencies to hold a noncitizen for up to two days past the period of their scheduled release in order to help facilitate the transfer of custody over to ERO. Under federal law, the illegal alien is then to be deported.
A lack of immigration history for Martinez-Fidel indicates he probably entered the US as a “gotaway,” that is, between ports of entry undetected by Border Patrol agents. Over the past three years of the Biden administration, over 800,000 gotaways are estimated to have entered the US.
The case of Martinez-Fidel is also the latest in a wave of crimes throughout the nation from illegal aliens, many of which ended far worse than the recent Alabama shooting, such as the murder of Georgia nursing student Laken Riley by 26-year-old Jose Ibarra, an illegal alien from Venezuela. That incident made national headlines and even President Joe Biden was forced to address it during his last State of the Union speech.
