(ProsperNews.net) – Forty-one shootings occurred in Chicago over Memorial Weekend as the city’s crime figures continue to climb. Nine people died in separate incidents, beginning with ten shootings on Friday evening, May 31. Among the weekend’s victims was a five-year-old girl who was struck by a bullet while sitting in the back of a car. The child died, and police have offered a $2,000 reward for help to find her killer.
Also on Friday, a 29-year-old was shot while sitting in his car at a gas station on West Pershing Road. Initial police reports indicate that two women approached the vehicle on foot before opening fire. A second 29-year-old and a 25-year-old sustained serious injuries on the same night and are recovering at the University of Chicago Medical Center.
Further fatalities included two young men in their twenties, who were shot dead by a killer who escaped in a dark Sedan.
On Saturday, June 1, a 51-year-old man received a shot to the arm, a 17-year-old sustained neck injuries, a 32-year-old took a bullet to the buttock, while another was shot in the neck as he strolled down a sidewalk. Paramedics transported three more men to Mount Sinai Hospital with gunshot wounds that evening. The following day, there were several more incidents.
Memorial Day weekend is regularly marred by violence in the Windy City, and local activists are calling for government action. Left-wing Mayor Brandon Johnson unveiled a new $100 million crime-fighting package just before Memorial Day weekend, which prioritized jobs and restorative justice. Street Pastor Donovan Price, however, does not believe this is enough.
“Jobs and things like that, of course, help, but they have to want jobs,” the Pastor said, noting that hardened criminals are unlikely to be swayed by employment opportunities. Mr. Price said parents play a significant role in how their children behave, and parental guidance is needed to steer young people toward a life of honesty and productivity.
