Mayor Cuts Services for U.S. Citizens, Accuses Trump

(ProsperNews.net) – Denver’s Democratic Mayor is cutting services for Americans in favor of immigrants and has blamed it on Donald Trump. Mike Johnston has welcomed more than 35,000 illegal immigrants to Denver, a self-described “sanctuary city,” but now says its American residents must be prepared for “shared sacrifice” to fund their living expenses.

At a press conference on February 9, Johnston said the migration crisis was Republicans’ fault because they failed to back the so-called “border bill” negotiated by the White House and bipartisan Senators, which Donald Trump described as a “death wish” for the GOP.

President Biden has also blamed Republicans and said Trump had used his influence to threaten and intimidate them out of backing the deal for political reasons. The President stated at a press conference that the GOP in Congress should “show some spine” and resist Trump’s demands.

The bill, described by Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson as “dead on arrival” in the House of Representatives, would allow President Biden to “shut down” the border if a specified number of people cross it in a day or week, but critics say the legislation contains a loophole meaning the border is only “shut down” at the President’s discretion, and does not oblige Biden to take action as has been touted.

While Denver’s Mayor announces cuts, data shows that the city is already struggling. For example, a major hospital recently turned patients away because it was so overwhelmed with immigrants. In January, the Denver Post reported that illegal aliens arrived at the hospital with no means of paying and that the Denver Health institution had already paid out $136 for migrant treatments.

CEO Donna Lynne told the Denver City Council’s finance and government committee, “Because our costs exceed our revenues, we are turning down patients every day.” She also reported that the organization cut the number of beds available last year to cut costs. Lynne furthermore told the post that 8,000 migrants made 20,000 hospital visits in 2023.
