Man Fatally Shoots Armed Thug During Robbery Attempt in Parking Garage

(ProsperNews.net) – A Georgia man has described shooting an attempted robber in a parking lot. The incident happened in Hapeville when a man claimed he was confronted by an armed criminal while walking from his apartment to his car. He called the police and said, “I just had to shoot somebody.”

Describing the incident to officers, he said a man jumped from a vehicle parked next to his own and pulled a gun on him. At that point, the caller described shooting the alleged attacker before noticing a second person in the car and running back to his apartment.

The second suspect reportedly fled to a nearby church and was apprehended after witnesses saw him urinating on a sidewalk. Police identified him as Alton Coleman, who has a lengthy criminal history. The dead suspect was identified as Lando Carter, who was released from prison in 2023 after serving a 15-year sentence for crimes including unlawful possession of a firearm and interfering with commerce with threats of violence.

Officers took Coleman into custody and charged him with murder and aggravated assault, later revealing that he had a criminal record dating back decades.

Hapeville is a small city in Fulton County in the Peach State, with around 6,500 residents. Despite its small size, it is considered one of the most dangerous cities in Georgia, ranking second for property crimes. The FBI says that the chances of falling victim to violent crime in Hapeville are as high as 1 in 134, adding that the city’s reputation is increasingly tarnished.

Nevertheless, Peach State residents have wide-ranging legal rights to protect themselves. Georgia is one of America’s “Stand Your Ground” states, meaning there is no duty to retreat from a volatile situation, and people have the right to use deadly force to protect themselves or to prevent the commission of a felony, including armed robbery. Stand Your Ground also means residents can use lethal force in any place and to prevent the commission of a felony against any person.
