(ProsperNews.net) – Univision, the American Spanish-speaking TV network, has come under fire from left-wing activists, celebrities, and politicians for screening an interview with former President Donald Trump. Media Research Center news analyst Jorge Bonilla said the upset is driven by a prior belief that Univision was a reliable left-wing source, and some are resentful that this is no longer true.
“What you’re seeing right now is a major meltdown, mainly on the left, from operators of the Democratic Party, members of the media, and members of the celebrity class as well,” Bonilla said.
Univision Chief Executive Wade Davis defended the network’s decision to interview Trump, saying Spanish-speaking Americans are not a uniform block and Univision had a duty to cater to various opinions and standpoints. However, this is not a view held by all on the network, as anchor and reporter Jorge Ramos condemned the decision.
Ramos has worked at Univision for decades and is one of its leading stars. He recently wrote in his weekly column that the sit-down with the former President placed the network’s independence in peril and made the newsroom “uncomfortable.” He went on to accuse Mr. Trump of threatening democracy and the Hispanic community by broadcasting “falsehoods and conspiracy theories.”
During the 2016 Presidential campaign, Trump had Ramos removed from a press conference after he stood up to question him without being called. When permitted to return, Mr. Ramos asked about immigration, prompting the former President to label him a “very emotional person.”
The all-Democrat Congressional Hispanic Caucus has requested a meeting with CEO Wade Davis to address the “misinformation” in Trump’s interview. The caucus penned a letter to Univision saying it was the duty of its members to fight for the rights of Hispanic American citizens and to ensure they are exposed only to “factual information.”
Prominent Hispanic conservatives, including The Heritage Foundation’s Mike González, also wrote to Univision urging it to ignore criticism from people who believe all Hispanic people are alike.
