(ProsperNews.net) – Actor Joyce Randolph, best known for her role as Trixie in The Honeymooners, has died at the age of 99. Reports say she died peacefully in her sleep at her home in Manhattan after several months of home hospice support. Her son, Randy Charles, announced the death of the last remaining cast member of The Honeymooners, which also starred Jackie Gleason, Art Carney, and Audrey Meadows.
The sitcom, which aired for 39 episodes in the 1950s, featured the lives of two New York couples and was born from a Jackie Gleason Show sketch. It was canceled after just one season but has maintained a steady fanbase for decades.
Randolph was born in Detroit in 1924 and began acting as a teenager before moving to New York City in 1943 to pursue her career. In 1951, Jackie Gleason asked her to appear on Cavalcade of Stars, ultimately leading to her role in the The Honeymooners. Later roles were few and far between, partly because she became typecast in her Honeymooners character. She once said that directors rejected her because “She’s too well known as Trixie.”
Nevertheless, she enjoyed acting alongside stars, including Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis and later became active in the United Services Organizations (USO). This non-profit US group provides entertainment to military members and their families.
The day after the TV premiere of The Honeymooners, Randolph married marketing executive Richard Lincoln Charles, and together, they had one son in 1960. Randolph said she did not want a nanny raising her son, and her acting career took a back seat. “I didn’t go after things. Maybe I should have,” she said before adding, “But taking care of someone … it’s wonderful if you have a good child. Wonderful.”
Her son described his mother as a wonderful actress and a “wonderful mom and loving wife.” He asked that fans donate to the Entertainment Community Fund in her name. Her husband sat on the charity’s board.
