(ProsperNews.net) – In a recent interview on NBC News, Vice President Kamala Harris made it clear she would not support religious exemptions in any federal legislation on abortion if she were to become president. Speaking with NBC’s Hallie Jackson, Harris doubled down on her commitment to codifying Roe v. Wade without any compromise, especially regarding the possibility of adding religious carve-outs to reach across the aisle in a potentially Republican-controlled Congress. When asked directly if she would consider allowing religious exemptions in the legislation to protect abortion access, Harris firmly rejected the idea, stating, “I don’t think we should be making concessions when we’re talking about a fundamental freedom to make decisions about your own body.”
Harris framed abortion access as a “basic freedom,” arguing that bodily autonomy must remain a non-negotiable right, implying that compromises could risk diluting the protections women previously had under Roe v. Wade. Her position has become a core part of her campaign, distinguishing her stance from some moderate Democrats who have at times suggested adding concessions to abortion laws. Harris has positioned herself as an advocate for women’s rights, frequently reiterating that the rollback of Roe v. Wade represents an unacceptable loss of personal freedoms for American women.
Harris has also suggested that she might support eliminating the Senate filibuster to push through abortion legislation without needing a 60-vote majority. By doing so, she would bypass the typical legislative process to protect what she calls a “fundamental right.” When pressed about whether she would reconsider her position to navigate a divided Congress, Harris sidestepped, saying, “I’m not going to go down that rabbit hole with you right now.”
Harris’s stance comes at a critical time as she prepares to visit Texas, where she is expected to focus on abortion rights in her campaign. This move aims to energize voters in a state where abortion restrictions have been especially severe since the Supreme Court’s reversal of Roe. For Harris, the upcoming visit and her uncompromising position on abortion reflect an effort to solidify her base, rally support, and set her platform apart from moderate voices within the party.
