Judge Released Man Who Later Stabbed Teens, Made Racial Slurs

(ProsperNews.net) – A man who allegedly stabbed two young girls in New York and shouted that he wanted to kill white people was released from jail just weeks earlier. Steven Hutcherson, from the Bronx, allegedly stabbed the girls at Grand Central station in New York City on Christmas Day while shouting racial slurs, including “I want all the white people dead” and “I want to sit next to the crackers.”

The girls, aged 14 and 16, were stabbed in the leg and back, and one required hospital admission for a collapsed lung. When police took Hutcherson into custody, he went on to allegedly attack his cellmate, leaving “gashes across the left side of his face and head.”

Despite an extensive record, Judge Matthew Grieco released Hutcherson with a conditional discharge after he threatened to shoot a man weeks before he allegedly attacked the teenagers. On that occasion, he also used racial anti-white language.

The New York Post reports that Hutcherson has at least 17 prior arrests on his rap sheet, as well as a history of mental health problems. His ex-girlfriend Charisma Knight told the newspaper he has schizophrenia and bipolar disorder but refused to take his prescribed medications.

Two weeks before allegedly attacking the girls in Grand Central, Hutcherson appeared before Judge Grieco for third-degree assault on Yussif Abdullahi, whom he accused of “working for white people.” Prosecutors sought 30 days detention for Hutcherson, but Grieco gave him a conditional discharge, meaning he must stay out of trouble for a year and attend two psychiatry sessions.

As law enforcement officers believe life is getting easier for criminals in New York, the Corrections Officer Benevolent Association (COBA) warned that the recent City Council decision to ban solitary confinement would make the situation even worse. COBA President Benny Boscio said the Hutcherson case perfectly explains why prisoner segregation is necessary. “This is exactly the kind of dangerous, violent person that this new law will embolden,” he said.
