(ProsperNews.net) – Judge Juan Merchan, overseeing Donald Trump’s criminal trial in New York, has refused to say whether the former President can attend his teenage son’s high school graduation. As proceedings got underway on April 15, Judge Merchan warned Mr. Trump that he must attend every day of the trial, saying he would be arrested if he didn’t show up.
On day one, Trump’s attorneys asked Judge Marchan if their client could attend Barron Trump’s graduation, but Merchan refused to answer, saying he would deal with the question closer to the graduation date in May. He said if proceedings advance in a timely manner and there are no delays or obstructions, then he will likely agree to pause the trial and allow Mr. Trump to attend the graduation.
Trump’s team, however, expressed frustration that the judge would not confirm if he would suspend the trial for a day and allow the former President to plan his attendance at the graduation event. Adviser Jason Miller tweeted that the “political attack” taking place in New York would probably mean Mr. Trump would miss an important day in his son’s life.
However, the former President’s critics say he misrepresented the judge’s comments for political reasons. Trump’s former attorney, Michael Cohen, called the spectacle “comical.” Cohen, who paid the “hush money” to adult actress Stormy Daniels and is therefore at the center of the case, said he wasn’t aware that Mr. Trump was so committed to his children’s high school careers, and doesn’t believe he attended the graduation ceremony of any of his older children. Cohen explained that he missed his 25th wedding anniversary and his wife’s 50th birthday because he was in prison serving time for things he had done at Trump’s direction.
Mr. Cohen pleaded guilty in 2018 to charges related to campaign finances and lying to Congress and spent just over a year in jail. He spent the rest of his three-year sentence under home confinement.
