(ProsperNews.net) – A judge warned Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis that he would strike her testimony if she continued to speak over questioning lawyer Ashleigh Merchant during a hearing on her relationship with special prosecutor Nathan Wade. Willis, who is pursuing Donald Trump on election interference charges in Georgia, was questioned for several hours about a relationship with Wade, whom she hired as part of the case against Trump.
The former President’s co-defendant, Michael Roman, filed a complaint against Willis, saying she should be disqualified because she was in an intimate relationship with Wade and they had used public money to enjoy lavish vacations together.
At a subsequent investigation hearing, Judge Scott McAfee called a five-minute recess and warned Willis she must listen to the questions being asked.
Ms. Willis stated that Roman’s complaint was a lie and insisted she did not hire Wade because of their romantic relationship, claiming the relationship only started afterward. Trump’s attorneys, however, say the romance creates a conflict of interest, and as such, Willis cannot pursue the case against Mr. Trump.
One witness, Robin Yeartie, testified that Willis and Wade had been having an affair years before the case against Trump was initiated and while Mr. Wade was married. Yeartie, a former friend of Willis, said the attorney told her about the affair before the indictment and that she observed them together “hugging and kissing” long before that time. She testified the affair began as far back as 2019.
After the recess, Willis’s attorneys said they would not recall her to the stand, in a surprise move that analysts say hinted at an admission that she could not convince the court that the relationship did not create a conflict of interest.
If conflict is found, the case against Trump in the Peach State would stall, and some legal experts say it is unclear what could happen at that point. On social media, Trump said there was “no way” Willis could explain away her “corruption.”
