(ProsperNews.net) – Uruguayan soccer player Juan Izquierdo tragically passed away after collapsing during a match in Brazil last Thursday. The 27-year-old defender was playing for Nacional in a Copa Libertadores game against Sao Paulo on August 22 when he suddenly collapsed on the field in the 84th minute. There was no contact with another player when it happened.
He was quickly rushed to the intensive care unit at Albert Einstein Hospital, where doctors fought to save him. Unfortunately, after five days, they announced he had suffered brain death following cardiopulmonary arrest. Izquierdo was placed on a respirator on Sunday and received neurological care on Monday, but it wasn’t enough to save his life. He was officially declared dead on Tuesday, according to GBN reports.
His club, Nacional, expressed deep sorrow over his death. They posted on social media, saying, “It is with the deepest sorrow and shock in our hearts that the Club Nacional announces the death of our beloved player Juan Izquierdo.” The club also sent heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and teammates, calling his death an “irreparable loss.”
Uruguayan soccer legend Luis Suarez also shared his sadness on social media, expressing how hard it was to put his feelings into words. “Pain, sadness, difficult to explain,” Suarez wrote. He wished Izquierdo peace and offered support to his family and friends during this tough time.
In tribute, Sao Paulo’s team wore jerseys with Izquierdo’s name during their Sunday match against Vitoria. It was a small but meaningful way to honor the player.
Izquierdo had a career that took him to several clubs, including Cerro, Peñarol, Wanderers, and Liverpool in Uruguay. He also played in Mexico with Liga MX’s San Luis. His passing has left the soccer world in mourning.
