(ProsperNews.net) – The President of Israel, Isaac Herzog, visited the United States to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the nation’s founding. The visit occurred amid tensions between the two nations resulting partly from the President’s previous snub of the Jewish state’s head of government, Benjamin Netanyahu. Furthermore, the Biden administration criticized judicial reform plans in Israel, and Biden described the current administration as the “most extreme” of his political career.
Meanwhile, however, on July 17, the White House reversed its previous position and invited Netanyahu to Washington, DC. The two leaders spoke by phone and Biden extended the invitation, but no date or further details have been made public. Some speculation suggests however that there will not be a formal meeting at the White House, but a less formal arrangement elsewhere.
During an interview with CNN in mid-July, President Biden explained his concerns regarding Netanyahu and said there were “problems in terms of his coalition.” Biden said Israel’s security was based on a two-state solution in the Middle East and added that members of Netanyahu’s cabinet believe Palestinians have no right to the land and Israel can go “wherever it wants.”
The lead-up to Herzog’s visit was marred by Democrats insisting on attacking the world’s only Jewish state as “racist.” Among those to speak out against the President’s visit was Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar, who has a long record of making condemnatory statements about the country and has been accused of antisemitism even by members of her own party.
The “racist” accusation came from Congressional Progressive Caucus chair Pramila Jayapal and is one frequently hurled at Israel despite its constitutional guarantee of equality and the high number of Arab-Israelis occupying positions of power. Meanwhile, several Islamic countries do not allow Jews to enter their territory.
The House of Representatives rejected the racist slur when it passed a resolution on July 18 condemning Jayapal’s attack and asserting its conclusive belief that Israel is not a racist state.
